The Next Big Thing Week 9: The Andromedans (Book Three of the Empire Series)

Thanks to Greg Lamb of The Indie Exchange for tagging me in the Next Big Thing Blog Hop.

What is a blog hop? It's like a game of virtual tag. I get to answer ten questions about my Work In Progress and tag 5 other authors for next week.

Ten Interview Questions for The Next Big Thing

1.      What is the working title of your book?

The Andromedans, which is the third and final book in the Empire Series.

2.     Where did the idea come from for the book?

My inspiration was an old British TV series, Blakes 7, and episodes of Dr Who (Inferno) and Star Trek which briefly explored an alternate universe where the heroes lived in a dystopian world and they faced uglier versions of themselves. I was interested in the worlds they depicted and wanted to explore what it would be like to live inside worlds like that from various angles.

3.     What genre does your book fall under?

Science fiction with elements of humor and romance. Some would call it military science fiction because of the setting, but it’s not.

4.     Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition?

I have faces for all of my characters, though they’re not actors.

Adrian is the scientist caught between a war and a hard place. Kali is a telepath and his consort who tries to rescue him. Drel Argus is a ruthless bounty hunter who is temporarily allied with them. Dr. Samantha Adding is an emergency room doctor who was 'accidentally' kidnapped by Adrian and has now become a rebel. Charles Sester is a psychostrategist who is helping them, though no one believes that is his goal. Jon Tucker is an infamous rebel leader they get mixed up with.

5.      What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?

A man tries to survive when his world falls apart.

6.     Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?

It will be published by a small indie press.

7.     How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?

I’m still working on it, but generally it takes 6 months to a year.

8.     What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?

In terms of scope, it’s like David Eddings’ novels. In terms of genre, it’s like the Honor Harrington books by David Weber.

9.     Who or What inspired you to write this book?

I was writing an ongoing story for some friends and the characters sort of...took over.

10.     What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?

The Andromedans is about the pain of being human when everything around you is falling apart.

Sometimes, being human hurts and we have a choice in how we will react. Our lives and our societies are shaped by those choices, and we live with the consequences. If we’re lucky enough, we may live long enough to regret them, or to realize we were right.

That is ultimately what all three books are about.
